Still celebrating their self-titled album going 5x platinum and earning worldwide airplay, Sublime was one of the most successful and powerfully-moving acts of all time. After all, with hits like ‘What I Got,’ ‘Santeria,’ and ‘Doin’ Time,’ what more is there to say? Refusing to be defined by one genre, Sublime’s ska-punk category was highlighted by bass-driven grooves, reggae rhythms, elaborate rhymes and style transitions- heavy metal to hip-hop, bluesy guitar solos to turntable scratching (!) - throughout one given song. Creating a space all their own, Sublime was a single group stacked with versed masterminds. Sublime’s 1992 debut album, 40oz. To Freedom, is hailed as one of the highest-selling independently released albums of all time. Originally criticized for its inclusion of too many contradictory music styles, the public reception and Sublime’s die-hard fans went on to prove critics wrong. So much so that the album cover’s crying sun has transformed into shorthand for SoCal’s beach culture and is now featured on our beloved Merch Tee.
